Bio:
I am a consultant at The Priory Hospital, and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, both in Birmingham. I have a special interest in knee and shoulder pathology. I perform both joint replacement (arthroplasty), and “key hole surgery” (arthroscopy), on knees and shoulders.
I qualified from the University of Birmingham in 1986 with a first class BSc in Pathology. I was awarded the faculty of engineering prize for my research regarding blood flow in sickle cell anaemia. I received my medical degree in 1987 with honours in Pathology.
Having completed house jobs in Birmingham I taught anatomy at the University of Bristol while sitting my initial surgical exams. I returned to jobs in Birmingham gaining my FRCS in 1991. I was appointed as an orthopaedic registrar on the West Midlands training rotation and subsequently gained my completion of training (FRCS Tr and Orth) in 1998. I was appointed to a consultant’s post in 1999 split between University Hospital Birmingham and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
Along with Duncan Learmonth and Samir Massoud, in 2004, I co-founded the Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic, based at the Priory Hospital.
I perform between 150 and 200 joint replacements of knee or shoulder each year including partial knee replacements and shoulder resurfacing. I also perform significant quantities of arthroscopic surgery again of the knee and shoulder including rotator cuff repairs of the shoulder and ligament reconstruction of the knee.
