Bio:
Dr Simon Heyland is a Consultant Psychiatrist in Medical Psychotherapy working within a tertiary NHS service in Birmingham.
‘My clinical focus lies in providing specialist psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals struggling with a range of psychological difficulties such as mood disorders and complex personality disorders.
With a background in medicine, psychiatry and psychodynamic psychotherapy, I strive to bridge the gap between biological and psychological approaches to mental health. My work often involves integrating psychotherapeutic techniques within psychiatric settings, aiming to offer holistic care that addresses both the mind and the body.
Beyond clinical practice, I am actively involved in medical education and professional development. As a member of the Faculty of Medical Psychotherapy Executive Committee at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, I contributed to developing the shape of psychotherapy within psychiatric practice. I have also chaired sessions at national conferences, facilitating discussions on emerging topics such as psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and the evolving role of psychodynamic approaches in modern psychiatry.’
My academic interests encompass the therapeutic alliance, psychodynamic techniques, and the management of medically unexplained symptoms. I am committed to advancing our understanding of how psychotherapy can be effectively integrated into diverse clinical settings, enhancing outcomes for patients with complex mental health needs.
In all aspects of my work, I advocate for a compassionate, patient-centred approach that recognizes the intricate interplay between psychological and physiological factors in mental health.
