Dr Jay Desai is an Independent Occupational Health Physician and Medical Assessor since 2000 with a long and established history in providing Occupational Assessments to Small and Medium sized Enterprises. Dr Desai is also an NHS Appraiser . In this role he facilitates the self-review of colleague doctors to reflect on their professional work, personal development plans, objectives, achievements, and challenges to identify strengths and areas for improvement through annual appraisal for personal and professional development, contributing to ongoing fitness to practise and improved patient care

Bio:

Dr Jay Desai is an Independent Occupational Health Physician and Medical Assessor since 2000 with a long and established history in providing Occupational Assessments to Small and Medium sized Enterprises.
His work is motivated by promoting and supporting organisations in using Occupational Health (OH) effectively and critically in safeguarding the health and productivity of the workforce by supporting wellbeing and compliance to protect individuals and organisations.
He offers expert advice on a wide variety of work-related issues including Fitness for work, Pre-employment Medicals, Sickness Absence Assessments, Health Surveillance for high-risk roles, Ill-Health Retirement (Including Pensions Assessment ) and Vocational Medical Assessments.
He holds special interests in Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome, Mental Health , Musculoskeletal Disorders and further in how both medical and non-medical factors influence rehabilitation.

He believes in investing in OH to deliver improvements in employee wellbeing and reducing costs associated with sickness absence and staff turnover. He is a firm believer in timely OH intervention to prevent health deterioration and to facilitate sustainable return-to-work. He advocates OH support to help employees remain in or return to work and he recognises the importance in the need for recommendations for adjustments and responding to employer specific questions.

Dr Desai has been a highly experienced General Practitioner for 32 years having recently retired from Primary Care Medicine to concentrate on his OH interests. His many years of primary care experience ,alongside his OH interests, have allowed for a diverse set of clinical and communication skills used to assit in supportive OH assessment.
He has enjoyed being a lead in the Education of Undergraduate Medical Students together with being a Trainer and Educational Supervisor for General Practice Registrar Training and Teaching. He has held positions as an Interview Panel Member for Admissions to the University of Birmingham Medical School , Interview Panel Member for Admissions into the West Midlands Deanery, GP Registrar Vocational Training Scheme and Examiner of Final Year Medical Students for the University of Birmingham Medical School Department of Community Based Medicine
He has also held additional interests in Primary Care Cardiovascular Medicine and Respiratory Disorders.

He was further awarded Fellowship at the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2018 in recognition of a significant contribution to medicine and general practice and has enjoyed acting as an ambassador for the RCGP alongside advancing his OH interest over the years.

Dr Desai believes in Continuous Professional Development to enhance his Personal Development to support his role in improving the health of the working nation aiming to achieve and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and
social well-being of workers in all occupations.
